People of Rochester - Jerome

I'm not the only photographer who notices other people carrying cameras or taking photographs. I was surveying the crowd at last weekend’s Lucky Flea Market, behind the Village Gate, when Jerome walked up and asked me about the camera I was carrying, and we started talking about photography. He’s an avid photographer and a sixth-grade teacher at School 29 in Rochester.

When he was 10, Jerome’s mother bought him a Kodak camera. “That kind of led the way, and I've just been shooting ever since,” he said.

He mostly shoots landscapes, but he also photographs high-school seniors and athletic events.

Originally from Springfield, Massachusetts, Jerome’s been in Rochester since 1987. He came here straight out of high school and attended college at the University of Rochester, where he got a degree in elementary education. He’s been teaching at Adlai E. Stevenson School 29 for 23 years. “I’ve been there ever since,” he said.

Online learning (during the pandemic) was a big challenge. “We made it through, but it was stressful," he said. "Hopefully next year things will be back to normal.”

His wife is also a teacher, and they have two boys. Besides photography, Jerome likes to go on hikes in the Adirondacks and various local parks, with his family.

Thanks, Jerome!
